Todd Rundgren and the original members of the 70s rock band Utopia will perform at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce on Nov. 3, reuniting on tour after more than three decades apart.

The show begins at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $39 or $49 for front section seating.

Blending elements of rock, funk, jazz and electronica, Utopia released two diverse albums in 1973 and 1975, helping to define the progressive-rock genre. The members gradually disbanded in 1975.

Frontman Todd Rundgren, known for solo hits "I Saw The Light" and "Hello It's Me," said he had considered for years doing a reunion tour with Utopia, but the five members could not align their schedules.

When original keys-player Mark "Moogy" Klingman was diagnosed with cancer last year, Rundgren and the others decided to cancel their projects and support their friend with a reunion tour.

"The rock gods really brought us back together," Rundgren said.

He said this tour should offer fans something unique because the songs will be played in their original form, but two special guests will add to the sound.

The band will use some vintage equipment and some modern, digital amps and effects pedals, making Utopia's sound crisper than before, Rundgren said.

"We have a few kinks to work out after not playing together for 35 years, so we still need some practice," he said, "but fans should be excited."

Utopia performed two reunion shows in January at the Highline Ballroom in New York.

Rundgren said that when tickets sold out both nights, he knew Utopia needed to do a full U.S. tour.

"This is really just friends having fun together," he said. "We're glad we get to do it one more time."

Utopia will play 12 dates on this tour, beginning in Hollywood, Fla. on Nov. 2 and then moving up the East Coast.

As a musician, songwriter, producer and computer software developer, Rundgren has worked with such musicians as Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad and Hall And Oates.

On many of his solo albums, such as "Something/Anything," Rundgren wrote, recorded, produced and distributed the music by himself, often using new technology and innovative approaches.

Despite his rock-star persona, Rundgren, 63, now views himself as a family man, prioritizing relationships over his music.

"I've had a long career with success here and there, but now I focus on spending time with the people that matter most to me," he said.

Todd Rundgren returns to IU for homecoming parade

By Mike Leonard mleonard@heraldt.com
October 24, 2011

Rock star and musical impressario Todd Rundgren will return to the Indiana University campus Friday to serve as grand marshal of this year’s homecoming parade.

He’s more than a fitting choice, given this year’s homecoming theme: “Rocktoberfest.”

The acclaimed songwriter, musician and producer served at the ninth instructor in the Wells Scholars Program at IU last fall. He gave several lectures and question-and-answer sessions for IU classes and performed a free recital at Auer Hall.

Rundgren also joined the IU’s Marching Hundred at Memorial Stadium during last year’s football game against Northwestern, leading a brief rendition of his sports stadium favorite, “Bang the Drum All Day.”

As grand marshal, Rundgren will ride in a convertible during the parade, which starts a 7 p.m. at Third and Jordan and culminates at Sample Gates at Kirkwood and Indiana. This year’s event will feature the inaugural Homecoming Light Parade, in which entries in the parade and participants are encouraged to use lighting in a variety of ways such as holiday lights, glow sticks, flashlights, car flashers and more, according to Tricia Riveire, alumni programs officer.

After other remarks and activities in the pep rally at Sample Gates, Rundgren will lead the Marching Hundred in a full version of “Bang the Drum All Day,” a jaunty, popular song regularly played at sports arenas across the country

Todd Rundgren's Utopia Touring Together Again for the First Time in 35

Todd Rundgren's Utopia Touring Together Again for the First Time in 35 years, Makes a Stop in Peekskill, NY
Todd Rundgren's Utopia adds a date in Peeksill, NY as part of their limited engagement east coast tour.

Todd Rundgren's UTOPIA

Peekskill, NY (PRWEB) October 19, 2011

Utopia /juːˈtoʊpiə/ is an ideal community or society possessing a perfect socio-politico-legal system. The word was imported from Greek by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island in the Atlantic Ocean. The term has been used to describe both intentional communities that attempt to create an ideal society, and fictional societies portrayed in literature.

Todd Rundgren’s Utopia (circa late 1970’s) was just that, the perfect collection of musicians coming together to create an ideal sound.

On January 29 & 30, 2011, a reunion of most of the members of the 1974 Utopia Mark II band (Rundgren, Moogy Klingman, Ralph Shuckett, John Siegler, and Kevin Ellman) was held for two nights at the Highline Ballroom in New York City. Proceeds from the first show went to defray medical treatment for Klingman's bout with cancer. Material was drawn from the 1972-1975 catalogs of Rundgren and Todd Rundgren's UTOPIA. This marked the first time this classic lineup performed together in over 35 years. Both shows sold out within two days. Also joining this group of incredibly talented musicians are Jesse Gress and Kasim Sulton.

Todd Rundgren’s Utopia is together again (with the same line up as the January 2011 benefit shows) for a limited East Coast run. Their 11 date tour will be appearing at The
Paramount Center for The Arts, In Peekskill, NY on Friday, November 18th.

Michele Rundgren's Bday party @ Akron show

The "Fan Party" on Friday 11/11 at IKRON has now been changed to "Mi Stock" -- a birthday party for Michele Rundgren. Also, Michele will be background singing with Mary Lou during "Something To Fall Back On" with the Hermits of Mink Halloween Mark II! Prepare for FUN!

Rundgren Radio update

In case you haven’t heard the news, the Rundgren Radio online radio program is retired except for special editions shows we may do on occasion. It’s been a fun 4 year ride and we appreciate you listening to the shows and keeping us going. Rundgren Radio completed over 200 shows, had over 100 different guests, presented over 20 Todd Rundgren concerts, and has had over 440,000 downloads. As a subscriber to this email database you will be alerted if we return for any shows which is one reason we are emailing you today :-).

On Tuesday, October 25th, we will be back for a special edition show to discuss the upcoming Todd Rundgren’s Utopia tour with our special guest Moogy Klingman. He requested another chance to reach out to our listeners before the reunion tour and of course we were happy to accommodate. The show will start at 8:30pm and listeners are welcome to call in and speak to Moogy.

Speaking of the TR’s Utopia reunion tour, just because the RR radio show is retired doesn’t mean the concert promotion side of RR is finished :-). We will be presenting one of the twelve TR’s Utopia concerts this November. The concert will be on November 12 in Akron, OH at the Akron Civic Theatre beginning at 8pm ET.

The night before the concert we will be hosting a fan party featuring a Todd Rundgren / Utopia tribute band, the Hermits of Mink Halloween Mark II, at the Ramada Plaza’s 19th floor ballroom overlooking downtown Akron. As an added bonus, Todd’s long time tour manager and member of his A Cappella tour ensemble, Mary Lou Arnold, will be singing background with the Hermits when they perform the song “Something To Fall Back On”! Tickets are only $12 advance and $15 at the door. It would be very helpful if attendees buy in advance so we can properly prepare for the right amount of people. The party not only includes the entertainment but an event laminate, cake, DJ for band breaks, and appetizers. There will also be a cash bar available for the thirsty people. The event weekend has been affectionately dubbed, “IKRON”. Tickets are available here …

https://rundgrenradio.tix.com

For info on the other 11 shows visit,

http://www.todd-rundgren.com/tr-tour.html or

http://trconnection.com/tour/t2011.

We are not aware of any plans for more shows so this tour may be it. In our opinion, the possibility of future TR’s Utopia concerts depends on the success of these 12 shows and how Moogy feels health-wise after the tour. We are well aware fans from the west coast, Chicago, UK, etc. want a TR’s Utopia concert but we aren’t in charge of the routing :-).

Our concert promotion company for non-Todd shows, Onward Promotions, will be presenting the first ever double bill concert featuring Utopian Kasim Sulton and Eliot Lewis on 10/16/2011, which is this Sunday! You all know who Kasim is of course. Eliot is the keyboardist for Hall & Oates and you have probably seen him on the Live From Daryl’s House shows with Todd as the guest. The show will be in the Long Island area in Bellmore, NY at the Brokerage Comedy Club. Tickets ($25) will be available at the Brokerage or you can get them up on our ticket site until sometime tonight at:

https://rundgrenradio.tix.com.

On Saturday, 10/22/2011 we will be presenting another Kasim Sulton concert but this one will be Rob Fetters who many of you may remember from the Psychodots if you attended the Todd+Healing album show in Toledo, OH. Rob is an excellent and very well respected guitarist and was also a founding member of The Bears (with Adrian Belew). The concert will be held in Cleveland’s #1 venue, Winchester’s Music Hall! You can get tickets by calling the venue at 216-226-5681.

Their website is:

http://www.thewinchester.net/.

Here’s some cool Todd news --- Five new Todd/Utopia packages available from the Edsel Label (part of Demon Music Group:

http://www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk/home)!

· “Runt” (two versions) + “Ballad Of”

· “Something/Anything?”

· “A Wizard, A True Star” + “Todd”

· “Initiation” + “Faithful”

· “Ra” + Oops! Wrong Planet”

These are all 2-on-2 packages, with the exception of “Something/Anything?”.

As bonus tracks they have added tracks from the 1998 JVC Japan-only release “Somewhere/Anywhere”.

“Runt” also includes all the different versions that were on the November 1970 mis-pressing of the album, featuring of course “Say No More” and the full version of “Baby Let’s Swing”.

All the booklet notes have excerpts by Paul Myers from his excellent book “Todd Rundgren In The Studio” as well as some liners notes he put together. They only have the Bearsville rights for Europe, so these re-issues will probably not appear on North American internet retailer sites, but they can be found on the UK sites i.e. Amazon.co.uk.

GIG REVIEW: TODD RUNDGREN, HMV Ritz, Manchester oct 1 ,2011

http://www.getreadytorock.com/reviews2011/todd_rundgren_gig5.htm

Review by David Randall

Photos by Steve Goudie

TODD RUNDGREN, HMV Ritz, Manchester
1 October 2011

The last few years has seen the great TR-i play to increasing audiences in the UK and we've also had two excellent albums as part of this UK revival: Liars and Arena.

This two-hour show came closest to what might be termed a 'greatest hits' set but as Todd joked if that were really true 'it would only last for about twenty minutes!'

Seemingly aware of his own jittery career trajectory, this set also perhaps emphasised why you really need to be in the TR zone to fully appreciate the man and performer.

Starting out with an energised 'Real Man' and 'Love Of The Common Man' he put on the electric guitar for a wonderful 'Buffalo Grass' but - in spite of evident audience approval for the electric - it was only deployed two or three times tonight.

Whilst you could argue that Todd did guitar-driven rock on his Arena tour in my mind his guitar playing - whilst underrated - has always been one of his greatest strengths and, later on, a longer Philly/soul interlude placed the emphasis on a fine voice but tunes that weren't his own.

No doubt the 'faithful' love him in all his guises but it is often this eclecticism (notwithstanding his prog and psych periods) that leaves some listeners confused. The faithful would no doubt have approved of 'Espresso' from the excellent 'The Individualist' (1995) whilst 'Lost Horizon' from 'A Capella' (1985) was another addition to satiate the insatiable. And, of course, the three tracks from 'Hermit Of Mink Hollow'.

The highlights, though, were real highlights and a long-held revelation that a few tunes from 'Liars' stand up to anything he's produced previously - 'Flaw' and 'Soul Brother' tonight - whilst the 'classics' were just that.

My personal highlight tonight was a song I have never seen him perform live and one of my personal favourites. 'Love Is The Answer' may have been a hit for England Dan and John Ford Coley but was originally performed by Utopia (from whom Kasim Sulton remains in the current band line-up) and of course written by Todd. The song's sentiments are as relevant now as they ever were: a truly wonderful piece of music and I sensed the crowd were delighted too.

After a tentative 'comeback' in the UK, including - frustratingly - a shared tour with Joe Jackson, Todd has ticked the boxes for guitar rock, album rock (A Wizard A True Star in February 2010) and, now, a triumphal 'greatest hits' outing for want of a better descriptor. But four sold-out dates at smaller venues is still not enough and one hopes he returns soon with a new album and a more extensive itinerary, plus of course that shiny acid green guitar.

Set-List: Real Man / Love of the Common Man/ Buffalo Grass/ Kindhearted Woman/ Determination/ Lucky Guy/ Can We Still Be Friends? / Espresso / Love Is the Answer / It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference/ Lost Horizon / Flaw/ Soul Brother/ I'm So Proud / Ooo Baby Baby / La La Means I Love You / I Want You/ Hawking / I Saw the Light/ Courage / Drive / Couldn't I Just Tell You? / Encore: Hello It's Me/ A Dream Goes on Forever
