TOUR INFO: new show added to ARENA tour OCT 9 Community Theater Morristown NJ
Hello, It's Todd
by Ed Kirchdoerffer
Thursday August 21, 2008, 9:24 AM
Todd Rundgren has been added to The Community Theatre's schedule for
Thursday, October 9 at 8 pm. Tickets are $37-52 and go on sale to the
public on Friday, August 22 at 9 am.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Rundgren found success on the pop
charts with songs such as "Hello, It's Me," "Can We Still Be Friends"
and "I Saw the Light." Later on in the 1980s, with his group Utopia,
he had hits with "Road to Utopia" And "Bang on the Drum," which, if
you've gone to any ball park or arena, is probably blasted at some
point during a game.
Rundgren's latest CD, Arena, will be released in September, and is a
tribute to the big sound of guitar-driven arena rock anthems. The
album showcases his unique songwriting style and sonically captures
the essence and energy of "arena" rock with bombastic, guitar-driven
tunes like "Mountaintop," "Strike" and "Mad," while the anthemic
song "Mercenary," transports you to a stadium with its epic
chorus, "How Do You Like Me Now?," resounding to every seat in the
house.
"I found myself just going out and doing this sort of guerilla guitar
quartet thing around the country and around Canada," said
Rundgren. "So when it came time to make a record, I thought maybe
I'll just continue in that vein and write something that is
appropriate to the guitar, since the fans seem to be enjoying it so
much. So when I decided to write a new album, I knew beforehand it
was going to be this kind of old-school guitar-rock record."
Visit The Community Theatre's website at www.mayoarts.org. or order
tickets at 973-539-8008.

41 Years Ago Today: Bo Bice & The Beatles
JENNIFER HUDSON HAS has the impossibly late debut album. Clay Aiken has the improbably conceived platonic love child. But of all the "American Idol" alums, Bo Bice has the funnest tag to play "The Name Game" with.
It's a different '60s pop phenomenon, however, that he's paying tribute to Saturday at Wolf Trap. Bice will join studio wiz Todd Rundgren, yacht-rock exemplar Christopher Cross, Foreigner lead singer Lou Gramm and Wings/Moody Blues vet Denny Laine to form a motley supergroup that will perform The Beatles' magnum opus, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Bice confesses that it's a bit of a stretch for a "Southern-rock guy," but he welcomes the challenge. "I wanted to step out of my comfort zone," he says.
Even among the pros, Beatles fandom is a matter of picking favorites. "I love ‘Sgt. Pepper's,'" Bice says, "but I have to admit, I'm more of a ‘Revolver'/‘Abbey Road' guy."
Still, he gives credit where it's due: "[‘Sgt. Pepper's'] was the first real concept album, the first album where you didn't have to have breaks in between songs. ... Without ‘Sgt. Pepper's,' we might not have seen ‘Dark Side of the Moon' or ‘The Wall.'"
And although George is Bice's top Beatle, it's a couple of Paul's songs — "Getting Better" and "Lovely Rita" — that'll give Bice a chance to shine.
A top-to-bottom re-creation of "Sgt. Pepper's" will close the show. In the first half, the frontmen will take turns with their own hits. Bice promises versions of "I'm Gone" and "Witness."
Bice also views the tour as an opportunity to hang out, network and receive a little tutelage from industry icons: "You never know where you're going learn your next lesson from."
» Wolf Trap, Filene Center, 1551 Trap Road, Vienna; Sat., 8 p.m.; $25-$40; 877-965-3872.
