TODD RUNDGREN SAYS PLAYING IN RINGO'S ALL STARR BAND IS "THE BEST GIG YOU COULD HAVE"

TODD RUNDGREN SAYS PLAYING IN RINGO'S ALL STARR BAND IS "THE BEST GIG YOU COULD HAVE"

Photo: Rob ShanahanRingo Starr is once again ready to get by with a little help from his musical friends, as the rock legend kicks off a brand-new North American tour with his All Starr Band tonight in Rama, Canada. Todd Rundgren has been a member of this All Starr Band lineup since 2012, and he says playing in the group is “the best gig you could have.”
He tells ABC News Radio that Ringo pretty much treats everyone in the band as equals, and that includes the Beatles drummer himself.
“There’s no kind of, like, Ringo class and our class,” explains Rundgren. “We stay at the same hotels that he stays in. We fly in the same plane that he flies in…You know, it’s not ‘I’m the star and the boss and you guys just work for me.’ He’s very…proud of the fact that this is a real band and he’s part of it.”
Todd, of course, seems grateful to be part of the All Starr Band too, explaining somewhat jokingly that he almost didn’t meet Starr’s conditions for being a member of the group.
“Ringo’s criteria for you getting in the band is you have to have at least three hits, and I have just barely three hits,” Rundgren says with a laugh. Among Todd’s tunes that are featured in the usual All Starr Band sets are “I Saw the Light” and “Bang the Drum All Day.”
The current incarnation of the All Starr Band also features Totoguitarist Steve Lukather, ex-Santana and Journeysinger/keyboardist Gregg RolieMr. Mister frontman Richard Pageand renowned session drummer Greg Bissonette. The lineup had remained completely intact from 2012 until just recently, when musical director and multi-instrumentalist Mark Rivera had to bow out because of his commitments as a key member of Billy Joel‘s touring band.
Rundgren, who played in two previous versions of the All Starr Band, says this incarnation boasts a special chemistry.
“Everyone just kind of clicked at the first rehearsal,” he points out. “We all get along really well with each other. We’ve all got a sort of a broad set of skills so that we all come off looking equally strong in certain ways.”
As for Ringo, Rundgren says he’s an absolute delight to be around, which makes for a very happy and harmonious experience on the road.
“[On] the tour now, he’s clowning around with us, he’s taking pictures and making jokes with our guests…and just being really friendly with them,” says Todd. “So you can see that he really cares about this whole ‘Peace and Love’ idea…and he’s trying to make himself the embodiment of it, in a sense. And it’s really inspiring to see.”
Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band’s North American summer tour is scheduled through a July 19 concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The group also has just announced a fall leg that gets under way on October 2 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and runs through an October 23 performance in Clearwater, Florida.

The 6 Most Rock N Roll Producers In Music

http://www.tonedeaf.com.au/launchpad/402861/the-6-most-rock-n-roll-producers-in-music.htm

Todd Rundgren

One of the most important aspects to note with Rundgren is that he is first and foremost, a musician. That’s why he emphatically understands what it is like as an artist to hand over the reigns to a foreign production figure. Firstly labelled a pop star, Rundgren learnt what it took not only write a hit record, but to produce it in a unique way that was true to the artist and resonated with the public at large.
The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was heavily involved in the rock opera movement of the 70s, perhaps best popularised by his work on Meatloaf’s record breaking Bat Out of Hell. This man’s sphere of influence stretches far beyond the curtains of Meat’s dramatic bellows. Believe it or not the likes of proto-punk gods Patti Smith and the New York Dolls desperately sought his expertise as well. Popular within the seedy underbelly that was New York City’s party scene, Max’s Kansas City, this artists presence was prevalent everywhere in the 1970s.
Today a heavily respected figure, Ruddgren’s influence is still boldly prominent in the works of Aussie heroes Tame Impala. The multifaceted creative’s manner of piecing together an almost chaotic orchestra of sound and make it completely listenable is a feat that has rarely been matched, he is – to quote his 1973 solo album - A Wizard, A True Star.
Ruddgren’s productions include: New York Dolls - New York Dolls (1973), Hall & Oats War Babies (1974), Meatloaf - Bat Out Of Hell (1977), Patti Smith - Wave (1979), The Psychedelic Furs - Forever Now (1982), XTC - Skylarking (1986).

JOEY MOLLAND IS OUR GUEST TONIGHT

RUNDGRENRADIO.COM TONIGHT TUESDAY 4/22/14!

Tonight, Tuesday 4/22/14 at 8:30pm ET at www.blogtalkradio.com/runt.

Tonight's show will feature special guest Joey Molland, the guitarist and sole surviving member of the British power-pop band Badfinger.  We will be discussing his new solo CD, Return To Memphis - his first in 12 years - and playing some clips from it.  Of course Todd Rundgren producing Badfinger's "Straight Up" will be mentioned as well as the song "Baby Blue" making it on the Breaking Bad TV finale.  We plan to take calls from listeners too.

BADFINGER became an incredible force of virtuoso musicians churning out hit after hit while being supported by the biggest band in the world. The band’s first album was the soundtrack to the movie The Magic Christian (Magic Christian Music). Their follow-up album, No Dice spawned the Pete Ham penned classic “No Matter What” (#8 U.S. Hot 100 Hit -1970) and an Evans/Ham composition “Without You” which became a #1 Hit in 1971 for Harry Nilsson and a #3 Hit for Mariah Carey in 1994. No Dice reached #28 on Billboard’s Hot 200 albums chart.

The bands third album Straight Up was regarded by many to be their best. George Harrison had considerable input on the album including playing slide guitar on “Day After Day” (#4 on Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1971). Leon Russell played piano on the track. The album also generated the hit single "Baby Blue" (#14 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart in 1972). George Harrison left before the album was completed to work on The Concert for Bangladesh and Todd Rundgren was brought in to finish the album. Production credits were shared between Harrison and Rundgren.

In more recent news, the popular TV show, Breaking Bad, finale ended with the Badfinger song, "Baby Blue".
