Well, now I know I won`t be losing any sleep on the 26th. Jesus, what a garish, tacky spectacle. The lights on the State tour were better (and without the video crap), the poor girls seem at a loss and are utterly wasted here. I saw the first tour over 40 years ago when it was just Todd, a tape recorded and a piano followed by the original Utopia band. It was a combination Something-Anything/Wizard/Utopia/Todd show and ran in excess of three hours. Age has its rewards.
The two 'dancers' look like the old strippers Dennis Hopper hung out with in Blue Velvet. They can't dance worth a shit. I don't mind tacky and garish, or even strippers for that matter, but wish Todd had a better set list. Nice to see him playing a bit of guitar and not sitting on his fat ass.....he doesn't seem to be as fat as the last tour. Hope the tour sells well so the bank will quit trying to seize his Kauai property. This Island Earth is sure a tedious song. At least there are a few good cuts off Global so we can keep hope alive for a comeback. Keep the videos coming!
Todd is going to do what Todd wants to do. Always has, always will. I am tired of the cynics. Go listen Arena or Hermit or Ra if that gets you going. I admire Todd for his passion, creativity and continuous improvement. The guy is nearly 70 and he is up there getting it and creating it. So if you don't like it, don't buy it, don't see it and don't try to ruin it for the rest of us.
I don't think criticism of the new (shitty) material is an assault on other TR fans that happen to like the current technoshit. Just as Todd absolutely does what he wants to do, among his fan base he evidently has fans that say what they want to say about his efforts. His continuous improvement from Something Anything to Global...rrriiiighhtt.
It seems like there's the makings of an entertaining tour here. If only the set list was great. If only the girls were actually coordinated with their dancing. If only they had strong singing... I actually like the idea and look of this show; could you imagine the possibilities? I think Global is a mostly successful album, much better than I thought from the previous short samples. Angry Winston...you're totally entitled to your opinion, but to call Todd fat is utterly hilarious. From 23rd...I agree that it's a much easier decision to pass on this show with the evidence shown above. I think there's one thing that we can all agree on - Party Liquor is truly awful. One positive thought here, if I may... Perhaps, as the tour proceeds, it'll come together as a tight show and the new material will sound better and better. Perhaps. Still love TR for continuously experimenting with his music, even if it's not always successfully executed. I look forward to his next project as always.
Michell said she chose the dancers. I don't think Todd had anything to do with it. I don't think they had much rehearsal time either and just had to pick up what she showed them, and she's not a great dancer either, especially nowadays. Apart from that I think the pay is considered too low. There is so much dancing on stage these days in every rock show that really good dancers are in high demand and can earn a lot of $$s.
I don't see any shame attached to Todd's losing his property in Kauai. He wanted it, he acquired it and he managed to stay there a lot longer than was really financially possible. So, he already achieved that and can let it go and move on to something else.
I am disappointed to learn Michelle chose the dancers. They are beyond horrible, and terrible singers as well. At first I thought they were just under-rehearsed, but now realize they just plain suck. Perhaps Michelle should stick to running a Tiki bar, which judging from the reviews is about to go out of business. Kauai has not been good to Todd. Michelle looks like she has gained 100 pounds since the move.
Still love Terra Firma and like Soothe a great deal. Earth Mother, however, may be the shittiest song Todd has ever written. It makes a Party Liquor sound like I Saw The Light. The set list is about 85percent shit and 15percent good Todd material.
That's how Michelle met Todd right? ;) get the old wigs and costumes out of mothballs...
The singers are going off key a lot. I just hope they aren't in the way of too many camera shots as it looks like they are blocking both sides when they are on stage. They also look nervous and not confident and I wonder if they have all that much experience with performance. I will have to see the show to get any real impression.
I have friends who are professional dancers and nobody really dances like that anymore -- now it's all what they call "contemporary" like the little girl in the Sia "Chandelier" video - you have to be super young and acrobatic and stuff.
